About Us

David Hoch invented "Hokey Spokes" in 2001 and founded Illumination Design Works in 2002. Hokey Spokes are unique bicycle safety lights which allow riders to display computer-generated images and text inside the spoke cage of their bicycle wheels while riding at night.

The Hokey Spokes Company sells its products direct via the telephone and Internet and direct to dealers. The company has been featured in Newsweek, US News and World Report, Teleconnect, Telecom Gear, Telecom Sources, Mac Home Journal, Wired magazine, CNBC, Playboy, Dateline NBC and others. Last year it was selected by Reader's Digest Magazine for its "Holiday Gift Guide." It has also been featured on the Home and Garden TV Network (HDTV) in the program "I Want That ! ".

Hokey Spokes were first introduced to the public at the Boston Gift Show in February 2001 and were received with a great deal of enthusiasm and interest.

In May of 2005, the Hokey Spoke Company was purchased in Boston by Carole and Richard Barnes and moved to Indiana.  Richard Barnes worked with David Hoch to develop the Hokey Spoke prototypes in 2001 and helped bring the product to market.

Carole and Richard Barnes will now concentrate on developing a marketing strategy that will make Hokey Spokes more accessible to the public by creating dealerships, working with bicycle retail stores, bicycle organizations, and continuing to work to enhance bicycle safety.

David Hoch is a 1983 graduate of MIT. Richard Barnes is a graduate of The University of Chicago and received his doctorate in 1987 from South Dakota State University.
